Seasonal Wholesale Merchandise

Consumers talk themselves into spending more on holiday items each year. $17 billion dollars is expected the exchange hands this Valentine's Day alone! (Source: National Retail Federation) Once the big day is over, many retailers are left with large stocks of holiday items that didn't sell. Storing all of these goods until the following year isn't feasible for many small retailers, and that is precisely where wholesale distributors come in.

One way wholesale retailers can capitalize on high holiday revenues, is offer to purchase the overstock items themselves. Approaching small business owners, and even larger retail chains with offers to purchase the left over stock in bulk may yield a great deal. Be sure the items are non-perishable, and that you have appropriate storage facilities to hold items until next year. Some items will store better and not be obsolete than others. Steer clear of seasonal items with dates or years on them, and always try to store wholesale items in the original packaging.

Another main way is to purchase the items from wholesale distributors, who have existing deals with retailers to purchase overstock seasonal merchandise. The deals may not be as great, but it might be more than made up for by eliminating the cost of a storage rental fee. Be sure to also factor in any product loss simply from that long length of storage time.

Don't forget, not all seasonal and holiday items are for one time of year only. Summer items can still be used in warmer climate year round. Some holiday decor can be used for other events. Such as, Halloween costumes and decorations for special events, and Easter decorations for any spring time function. Alert your customers that you have specialty items with flyers and other circulations of sales. Recommend New Year's decor for quarterly sales parties, since it is still in the same year. You never know when a client may have a special need for Christmas ornaments in July, for a "Christmas in July" fund raiser! Encourage customers to be creative, and you will find a way to turn wholesale seasonal stock into a great investment return.
