Product packaging is a challenge for wholesale retailers. Closeout and liquidated products are typically so far along in shelf life, that the cardboard or plastic encasing the product has seen better days. The original packaging did a bang up job of protecting the product inside. Why, if it wasn’t for the self sacrifice of the original packaging, the product inside wouldn’t be in its pristine and top-performing status today. The challenge is how do you properly display a wholesale product to translate this message to the consumer?
First, there are tons of products available where the original packaging isn’t necessary. Items such as apparel, accessories, and photo frames are perfect examples of products best displayed outside of their original packaging. Few customers will buy a belt they can’t try on, or a picture frame they can’t pick up and inspect. Investing in classic shelves and hanging racks are imperative to display these products. Store fixtures are additionally handy even in displaying items still inside their original packaging.
Other wholesale items, such as toys, and electronics are best left in the original packaging. Liquidated products with specifications, small pieces, and instructions are best left in the box. Customers have greater confidence all components are there when the original packaging is available, no matter what state it is in. One way to remedy a heavily damaged box is to use that product as the display model. Then you can sell the item “As Is” since it is a floor model, just be sure to keep any accessories or information handy for the buyer.
Finally, no matter what type of wholesale items you are displaying, be sure to dress up the display to appeal to the customer. Mannequins in flattering outfits, or a small set of stairs to highlight shoes are both ways to impress your clientele. Feel free to get creative! Use swaths of bargain fabrics in flattering colors to dress up shelves lined with liquidated products. Outfit a desk with wholesale office supplies. Or, setup a small play area for children using examples of overstock toys you have available. The possibilities are endless, and all are easy ways to help your products fly out the door in arms of happy customers.
