The Irish brought Saint Patrick’s Day to the United States of America. The first civic, public celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day was in Boston, Massachusetts in 1737, and During the first celebration, The Charitable Irish Society of Boston put together the first Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in the colonies on 17 March 1737. The first time St. Patrick’s Day was celebrated it was in New York City and was held at the Crown Thistle Tavern in 1756. The Irish soldiers were in New York’s having the first Saint Patrick’s Day Parade on 17 March 1762 in the British Army. Also In 1780, General George Washington, commanded soldiers of Irish descent in the Continental Army, and allowed his troops a holiday on 17 March for solidarity with the Irish in their fight for independence. This was known as The St. Patrick’s Day Encampment of 1780. Today, Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated by many in America by Irish and non-Irish alike and it is generally accepted as an All-American Holiday.

Americans mostly celebrate the holiday by wearing green clothing. Therefore many people, regardless of ethnic background, wear green-colors for clothing and or items as well, so you have to have something green.  Traditionally, if you don’t have green on and if you are caught not wearing green you are suppose to get pinched.

Some cities really celebrate by painting the traffic signs stripe of their parade routes green. Chicago Illinois even dyes its river a deep green color and has done so since 1961. The sewer workers use green dye to check for sewer discharges or abnormalities and got that idea to turn the river green on St. Patrick’s Day. Indianapolis has that same trick up there sleeve and they also dye the main canal green, and Savannah dyes its downtown city fountains green, as well as the University of Missouri Rolla and the St Pat’s Board Alumni paint 12 blocks green for the annual parade. Many places like even New York cities and other places are dyed green each year.
